Cricklade’s Emma Kate Lidbury – Triathlon and Journalist Update Jan 2011.
IT TAKES a lot of guts to give up a secure job to pursue your sporting dream but “that is just what Cricklade triathlete Emma-Kate Lidbury is doing” and the bold move seems to be paying off.
Emma-Kate was introduced to the sport of triathlon when, as a reporter on the Oxford Mail, she was sent on an assignment to write about her experiences competing at the Beaufort Triathlon in 2005.
Five years later she has broken into the top echelons of the sport and in November she finished tenth in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships at Clearwater in Florida.
The outlook had not looked rosy in her first year as a full-time professional triathlete as she was plagued by injuries. She admits now that was a result of over training and trying just a little bit too hard.
But 2010 put her back on the road with excellent podium finishes in the English and Belgium qualifiers, before her fine effort against the world’s best.
As a relative rookie in this brutal sport, Lidbury now has the confidence to compete with the elite and she cannot wait for the 2011 Ironman 70.3 World Championships when it moves to Las Vegas.
