PRESS RELEASE 25th March 2011
Welcome Open Space for Cricklade
The people of Cricklade are now proud owners of what promises to be a wonderful piece of public open space close to the centre of the town. One of Britain’s largest house building companies, Taylor Wimpey, has generously transferred the land known as Long and Hall Close to Cricklade Town Council for just £1.
This large area sits between housing developments, one having been built by Taylor Wimpey during the early 1980s. It is fondly remembered by some residents as “Dick’s Field” from the days when it was used for grazing. Going back even further, Cricklade is actually reclaiming part of its heritage as the Saxon ramparts run through this land as does a historic mere stone marking the boundary of the old borough. Though now overgrown, the Town Council plans to reveal it as an excellent green space leaning on its historical worth with mapped walks and interpretation boards. All good for local people as well as giving a boost to this pretty town’s tourism industry.
Chair of the Town Council, Councillor David Tetlow said: “This is a special moment for the town. Local people have asked the Town Council to do what it can to make sure that the land is retained for local people to enjoy for years to come. We are very grateful to Taylor Wimpey to have passed the land back. Our next move will be to talk more about what residents they would like to see happen and with other interested groups such as English Heritage.”
Jon Fletcher, Managing Director, of Taylor Wimpey Oxfordshire said “This is an example of how Taylor Wimpey works alongside communities. The land in our ownership was an area where it was right to preserve both its historic worth and green value for local people. We are pleased to be able to return the land to the town for what will be an enormous community asset.”
